ITRI 615 – Assignment 2
Write a report on protection in operating systems. Use chapter 5 from Whitman & Mattord as a guideline. Choose any version of Windows as your frame of reference and report on how it achieves/implements the following:
• Separation
• Memory and address protection
• File protection
• User authentication, especially passwords
• Policy, trust and assurance
Do not forget to address open source software/operating systems as well, specifically what they contribute with regards to improving operating system security. Especially for this assignment consult user/community forums and also technical papers, amongst your other sources.
Focus on documenting current practices, identifying shortcomings from your perspective and making recommendations where and when relevant.
